The Monk Botanical Gardens functions as an outdoor classroom. Supported by an Urban Forestry Grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, a number of educational signs are positioned along Garden trails, describing various environmental issues, and informing viewers of their role in helping to preserve our natural environment.
Sign topics are:
Invasive species….how to identify invasive plants and trees, the risk they pose to the natural environment, what you can do to eradicate them.
Insects…good and bad, and what you can do to keep invasive insects like the emerald ash borer from damaging the natural environment.
Tree canopy…the value of trees to our environment, and how you can cultivate a healthy tree canopy on your property.
Stormwater…the damage that unmanaged storm water can do and effective management methods like rain gardens and permeable pavement.
